Surviving Hong Kong Summer: Your Complete Hair Guide
Hong Kong summer is not gentle. From May through September, the combination of intense heat, 80–90% humidity, heavy rainfall, aggressive air conditioning, and UV exposure creates a uniquely hostile environment for hair. Most people notice their hair getting progressively worse through summer without really understanding why — or what to do about it.
Here's what's actually happening, and what actually helps.
What Hong Kong summer does to your hair
Humidity causes the hair shaft to absorb moisture from the air, which makes the cuticle swell and lift. This is frizz. The more porous your hair — from bleaching, colouring, or previous damage — the worse this effect.
Heat and UV exposure accelerate colour fade and dry out the hair shaft over time, particularly for blondes and those with significant lightening. Sun protection for hair is not a luxury in Hong Kong — it's maintenance.
The constant cycling between outdoor humidity and heavily air-conditioned interiors creates a yo-yo effect on the hair cuticle, repeatedly opening and closing it, which contributes to roughness and dullness over time.
Sweat and scalp buildup increases dramatically in summer, which can slow down hair growth and make the scalp feel congested and itchy if not addressed properly.
Your pre-summer checklist
Get a keratin treatment before the heat peaks. April and early May are the ideal window — before full humidity sets in. A keratin treatment at this point gives you the smoothest possible base for summer. We recommend Premium Keratin Caviar at Bruneblonde for its formaldehyde-free formula and repair benefits, particularly if your hair is colour-treated.
Book a scalp treatment. The scalp is often neglected until there's a problem. A detox and hydration treatment before summer — we offer dedicated scalp spa services at Bruneblonde — removes buildup, balances the scalp environment, and sets you up for healthier growth through the season.
Reassess your home haircare. If you're still using a mainstream sulphate shampoo, summer is the time to switch. Sulphates strip moisture from the scalp and hair shaft, which summer humidity then overcompensates for. A sulphate-free, hydrating routine is significantly kinder to summer hair.
During summer: what to do
Use a weekly hydrating mask. Not a conditioner — a mask. Leave it on for at least 5 minutes. In summer the hair needs deeper hydration than conditioner alone provides.
Protect from UV. There are dedicated hair sunscreens and UV-protective sprays available — apply before prolonged outdoor exposure. Your Bruneblonde stylist can advise on the right product for your hair type.
Rinse before swimming. Whether it's a pool or the sea, saturate your hair with fresh water before getting in. Hair that is already full of water absorbs less chlorine and salt.
Be strategic with heat styling. In summer, less is more. Air dry where possible. If you must blow-dry, use the cool setting for the final pass to close the cuticle.
The scalp question
One of the most common complaints we hear in summer is an itchy, oily or congested scalp. This is almost always a combination of increased sweat, over-washing with harsh products, and a disrupted scalp microbiome.
Our Hair & Scalp Spa treatments address this directly — we use dedicated scalp protocols designed to detox, balance and hydrate the scalp, not just treat the symptom. If you've been dealing with scalp issues for more than a few weeks, book a scalp consultation rather than just switching products.
The bottom line
Hong Kong summer is hard on hair. But with the right preparation, the right products, and a professional treatment or two, it doesn't have to be. The clients who come in for a keratin treatment in April and maintain their routine through summer consistently have the best hair in September.
