Keratin vs. Japanese Straightening vs. Relaxer: What's the Difference?

If you've been researching hair smoothing treatments, you've probably encountered at least three different options — and potentially conflicting information about all of them. Keratin treatments, Japanese straightening, and chemical relaxers are often grouped together but they are fundamentally different processes with different results, different maintenance requirements, and different risks.

Here's the honest breakdown.

Keratin Treatment

A keratin treatment coats and temporarily seals the hair cuticle using a keratin-based formula, activated by heat. It smooths, reduces frizz and adds shine. It is not permanent — results typically last 3–5 months before gradually washing out. It does not permanently alter the structure of the hair.

The key variables are the formula and the salon applying it. Formulas that contain formaldehyde or glyoxylic acid deliver strong results but carry health concerns with repeated exposure — both for the client and the stylist. At Bruneblonde, we use Premium Keratin Caviar by EM2H which is formulated without either. The results are excellent and the chemistry is clean.

Keratin treatments are suitable for all hair types, including colour-treated hair. They add a repair benefit alongside the smoothing effect, which is particularly valuable for chemically processed or heat-damaged hair.

Japanese Straightening (Thermal Reconditioning)

Japanese straightening, also known as thermal reconditioning or Yuko straightening, permanently alters the chemical bonds in your hair to make it straight. The result is completely straight hair — not smoothed, not softened, but straight — that lasts until it grows out.

This is appropriate for clients who genuinely want permanently straight hair and are committed to that result long term. Because it is permanent, regrowth requires touch-up treatments at the roots. It is not reversible. It is also not suitable for heavily bleached or previously relaxed hair, and can cause significant damage if applied incorrectly.

It is a very different commitment to a keratin treatment.

Chemical Relaxer

A chemical relaxer permanently breaks down the protein bonds in curly or coily hair to reduce curl and volume. Like Japanese straightening, it is permanent and grows out rather than washing out. Relaxers have been used for decades, particularly on afro-textured hair, and range widely in strength.

The risks with relaxers are real — scalp sensitivity, breakage and long-term structural damage are all possible with overuse or incorrect application. There is also a growing body of research into the health implications of certain chemical relaxer ingredients, which has led many clients to explore alternatives.

Which is right for you?

If you want to reduce frizz and improve manageability in Hong Kong's humidity, with the option to change your mind in a few months — a keratin treatment is the right choice. It is low commitment, high reward, and compatible with coloured hair.

If you are certain you want permanently straight hair and understand the commitment involved — Japanese straightening is a proven option, applied correctly by an experienced stylist.

If you have afro-textured hair and are looking for significant volume reduction — discuss your options thoroughly with your stylist before committing to any chemical process. The answer depends heavily on the current condition of your hair.

Our team at Bruneblonde will always give you an honest assessment at consultation. We will not recommend a treatment your hair isn't ready for.
