What is a keratin treatment?

Keratin is a protein that makes up the structure of your hair. Heat, colouring, chemical processes and environmental stress all deplete it over time, causing the hair shaft to become porous and rough — which is what causes frizz. A keratin treatment infuses the hair with a keratin-based formula, smoothing the cuticle and sealing it flat. The result is smoother, shinier, more manageable hair that resists humidity far more effectively.

It is not a permanent straightener. It softens and smooths — the degree of straightening depends on your hair type and the formula used.

Why Hong Kong specifically?

Hong Kong sits at 70–90% relative humidity for a significant part of the year. Humid air forces moisture into the hair shaft, causing the cuticle to lift and the hair to expand — that's frizz. A well-applied keratin treatment seals the cuticle so that moisture absorption is dramatically reduced. For anyone with naturally wavy, curly, or frizz-prone hair living in Hong Kong, it is genuinely transformative.

How long does it last?

Which keratin treatment is right for you?

Premium Keratin Caviar is our preferred treatment. Developed by French professional brand EM2H, it is formulated without formaldehyde and without glyoxylic acid — two chemicals commonly found in keratin treatments that raise health and safety concerns with repeated exposure. The Caviar formula is enriched with caviar extract, keratin, collagen and argan oil, making it especially effective on colour-treated and chemically processed hair. It repairs the fibre as it smooths, rather than simply coating it. Bruneblonde is among the very few salons in Hong Kong using this treatment — we import it specifically.

What to expect on the day

Your appointment will typically take 2–3 hours depending on hair length and density. The hair is washed, the treatment is applied and worked through, then sealed with a flat iron at high heat. You will leave with noticeably smoother, shinier hair. Most treatments require you to keep hair dry and unbound for 24–48 hours after application.

Who is it for?

Keratin treatments work on all hair types — straight, wavy, curly, and afro-textured. The results vary: fine straight hair will see shine and frizz reduction; curly or frizzy hair will see significant smoothing and volume reduction. Colour-treated hair benefits particularly from the repair component of the Caviar formula.

It is not recommended immediately after a chemical relaxer or during pregnancy.
