How to Make Your Keratin Treatment Last Longer: The Bruneblonde Edit

How to Make Your Keratin Treatment Last Longer: The Bruneblonde Edit

You've invested in a keratin treatment. The results are exactly what you wanted — smooth, shiny, manageable hair. Now the question is: how do you keep it that way for as long as possible?

The answer is simpler than most people think. A few specific habits and the right products will extend your treatment from 10 weeks to up to 4 months. Here's what actually matters.

The single most important rule: ditch the sulphates

Sulphates are the detergent agents in most mainstream shampoos. They are highly effective at removing oil and buildup — and equally effective at stripping your keratin treatment. The chemical bonds that the treatment creates in your hair are broken down rapidly by repeated sulphate exposure.

Switch to a sulphate-free shampoo immediately after your treatment and keep using it for the duration. This one change makes a bigger difference than anything else on this list.

At Bruneblonde we recommend our own Bruneblonde Natural Haircare range, which is formulated sulphate-free and designed to work in harmony with treated hair.

Wash less frequently

Every wash, even with sulphate-free products, gradually loosens the treatment. In Hong Kong's climate this is a challenge — scalp sweat in summer is real. But if you can reduce washing from daily to every 2–3 days using a dry shampoo in between, you will noticeably extend your results.

Protect from heat

Always use a heat protectant before blow-drying or using a flat iron. The same heat that sealed your treatment in can accelerate its breakdown without a protective barrier. Look for products with thermal protection to at least 230°C.

Protect from humidity on the worst days

On extremely high-humidity days — peak summer in Hong Kong — a light smoothing serum or hair oil applied to dry hair before you leave the house acts as a barrier layer. It doesn't replace the treatment but it slows moisture absorption on contact. A small amount of hair oil or a dedicated anti-humidity serum is sufficient.

Sleep on silk or satin

Cotton pillowcases create friction that roughens the hair cuticle overnight. A silk or satin pillowcase significantly reduces this. It also reduces the general wear on your hair, which helps maintain the smoothness the treatment creates.

Avoid saltwater and chlorine

Both break down keratin treatments quickly. If you're swimming in Hong Kong's pools or heading to the beach, rinse hair with fresh water before entering, apply a light oil or leave-in to create a barrier, and rinse thoroughly with fresh water immediately after. Do not let saltwater or chlorine dry in your hair.

The products we recommend

For maintaining a keratin treatment in Hong Kong, the essentials are a sulphate-free shampoo, a hydrating conditioner, a weekly mask, and a heat protectant. Our Bruneblonde Natural Haircare range covers the shampoo and conditioner, whilst Oribe will cover off the treatment masque and heat protection — formulated specifically for the demands of Hong Kong's climate on treated hair.
